Child custody is always a hot topic among people who are divorcing or who have divorced in the past. One problem that commonly comes up is when one of the two parents wants to introduce a new spouse or partner to their children.

As a parent of young children, you don’t want to put them into compromising situations. On top of that, you don’t know much about the new girlfriend or boyfriend. As a result, you’re not sure if you want your ex to introduce someone new.

One thing everyone should realize is that you have to be careful about who you introduce to your children. You never want to put children in a position where they’re in danger or threatened because of someone you bring into your home.

In fact, if you bring a new boyfriend or girlfriend into your home who treats your child negatively, it’s possible to lose custody or have it modified in the other parent’s favor to protect your child from abuse. Unless you’re absolutely certain that the new person is someone you want around your child, it’s best not to introduce them.

As far as timing, it’s usually better to introduce children to new partners only when they’re not just casual dates. You don’t want a child to become attached to your partner, only to have to break up with that person shortly thereafter. Your child is already dealing with losses and changes, and losing someone again can feel devastating.

Both parents need to communicate about the people they bring into a child’s life to stay on the same page. If you have concerns about your ex-spouse’s choices and the safety of your child, you should speak up and address the problem quickly.
