If you knew that your job could potentially lead you to divorce, would you change fields? It’s an interesting question that often can’t be answered, because people are already set in their careers. However, a study has been able to highlight the fields most likely to result in divorce for those under 30 years old.
Divorce rates are fairly high in the United States, and part of the reason can be due to the jobs couples work. For example, first-line enlisted military supervisors who are 30 or younger have a 30 percent chance of divorce. That’s high enough to make being in the military the greatest job-related factor in divorces.
Who else is at a higher risk of divorce? Mechanics, technicians and logisticians, the study found. It may seem odd, since these jobs are (more or less) steady and pay decently. Interestingly, it’s those in engineering and technical trades most likely to go through a divorce, making up the top 20 job those divorced under 30 hold.
Of course, when it comes to the military, there’s no way to make that life easy. There is plenty of moving, and there are constant threats of conflict. It can be incredibly stressful, which puts a strain on a marriage. Additionally, those who serve and attempt to return to civilian life may find it hard, struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder from conflicts or face other issues that make married life difficult.
While many strains on a relationship can be addressed and overcome, not all can. If your marriage is ending, you need to take steps to protect what’s yours before you head to court.
